Description:
Compared to other capacitive touch sensors, which require just enough sensitivity to reliably detect a touch on a surface, proximity sensors require greater sensitivity and extend their e-field well beyond the touch surface. Since self capacitive sensors typically provide greater sensitivity, they are a natural choice for the proximity sensor. And a proximity sensor doesn't have to be a single electrode, such as the sensor shown in red in the illustration. Multiple electrodes can be configured as proximity sensors to increase the area and range of detection. With CapTIvate, proximity sensors are the perfect sensor to work with the hardware state machine, to create a proximity detection mechanism without requiring the CPU.
